As the new school year and sports season kicks off, athletes are gearing up for practices, games, and tournaments. While most people focus on physical conditioning and skill development, there’s another vital aspect of preparation that’s often overlooked: concussion baseline testing.
What Is Baseline Concussion Testing?
Baseline testing is a pre-season exam conducted by a trained healthcare provider to assess an athlete's brain function before any injury has occurred. The test measures things like memory, reaction time, balance, concentration, and other cognitive functions. In the event of a concussion during the season, these baseline results provide a valuable point of comparison to help determine the extent of the injury and guide a safe return to activity.

Why Is It Important?
A concussion can be subtle and doesn’t show up on imaging like X-rays or MRIs. That’s why baseline testing is so important—it gives us a personalized benchmark for each athlete's normal brain function. After a suspected concussion, we can compare the post-injury test to the baseline to more accurately assess the impact and track recovery.
Who Should Get Tested?
Baseline testing is recommended for:
Student-athletes in contact and non-contact sports
Youth aged 10 and up
Anyone with a history of concussions
Athletes returning to sport after a long break
Even if you had a baseline test last year, it’s wise to update it annually to ensure accuracy and account for any changes in development, especially in growing teens and young athletes.

When Should You Do It?
Now is the perfect time—before practices start and the season is in full swing. Testing is quick, non-invasive, and can provide peace of mind for both athletes and their families.
